How to access the Chiki IRC channel

Download Gaim

Gaim is a free (GPL) multi-format IM client. That means, not only will it allow you to access IRC, but MSN, ICQ, Jabber/GTalk and AIM.

Most likely, you'll be using windows, so pick the very first option and download. It's about a 6mb file, so it shouldn't take long.

Install

Follow all the defaults for the install. MAKE SURE when it offers to install the GTK2+ toolkit or something like that, you say yes.

Setup

  • Click on the Gaim icon in the start menu. You will then face a small login window.
  • Click the 'Accounts' button.
  • Click 'Add'
  • Where it says AIM/ICQ, click the drop down box and select IRC
  • Go down to where it says
irc.freenode.net
  • Change it to
irc.oftc.net
  • Enter a screen name and password.
  • Click 'Save'
  • Then, back at login, select 'yourusername@irc.oftc.net'
  • Enter your password.
  • If a 'NickServ' Window comes up, like this:
(09:16:04) NickServ: (notice) This nickname is registered and protected. If it is your
(09:16:04) NickServ: (notice) nick, type /msg NickServ IDENTIFY password. Otherwise,
(09:16:04) NickServ: (notice) please choose a different nick.
  • Go back to accounts, click 'Modify' and change your username.
  • Once that does not appear, Go to the window called 'Buddy List'
  • Click Chat
  • Type '#chiki' into the channel, leave password blank
  • Click 'Join'

And wha la! You can now talk on the Chiki IRC channel
